Committed to Collaborative Exploration
About
Thoughtfully Psychology is a new mental health counselling clinic in Edmonton, Alberta that offers individual and family psychotherapy for children, adults and family units from all backgrounds and walks of life.
Counselling can help us understand why we think, feel, and behave as we do. Our experiences are often abstract, complex, and unconscious, making this understanding difficult. There is a proverb from Eastern philosophy, that fish are the last to discover water. We are naturally immersed in our experiences, trying to get through each day as best we can, which can make it even more difficult to pause and see the full picture.
Talk therapy, counselling, carves out a space and time for us to:
reflect on our lives and not be alone in our experiences
obtain an objective point of view
learn about our mental experiences
develop personalised actions plans and coping skills
experience empathetic accountability towards authentic growth.
We emphasize that counselling should be a friendly, supportive, non-judgmental space that allows us to be more aware and accepting of our experiences so that we can work towards thoughtful living.
This leads us to how we came up with our name!
We want clients to think fully, or “Thought-Fully” (a pun to show our good humour)
We value providing a thoughtfully personalized counselling experience.
Our main goal is to empower our clients to live thoughtfully
Hi!
I’m Shalini Dhunnoo, M.C., R. Psych. I’m a Registered Psychologist, licensed through the College of Alberta Psychologists, and have been championing mental health awareness since my own struggles with trauma, mental health and hesitancy with counselling as a teenager. Through my journey to understand myself and human nature, I found my passion in supporting others with mental health in a friendly and informative manner.
For the past 9 years, I have had the opportunity to volunteer and work in various areas, including in a hospice, youth centre, and correctional institution. I have worked in private practice for the past five years.
I view counselling as a collaborative conversation. The client is the expert of their experiences and I can bring forth clinical knowledge and experience, with empathy, for personalised treatment. I prioritize working with clients in a way that is real, good-humored, and goal focused. I strive to help clients understand their needs and strengths to enhance authentic, healthy living.

Empathy
We value every individual’s unique story, experience and perspective. We care about our clients, the pain they endure and their mental health needs. We value individualized support to help all people gain the wisdom and tools they need to experience more joy in their life. We do not see our clients as problems to solve, rather people living out dynamic and important stories. We see beyond diagnoses and symptom management and are empathetic in getting to know our clients and their perspectives.

Positivity
We strive to empower clients by encouraging them to see their strengths and to take steps towards a life of gratitude, fulfillment and joy. We practice with a lightness that includes genuine friendliness, hope and humour to help clients emphasize and elevate the positive aspects in life.

During your first session, your counsellor will complete a thorough assessment of your concerns and related factors. This assessment may take two sessions. Future sessions will consist of talk therapy that applies scientifically validated procedures to help individuals improve their mental health. Such procedures help individuals become aware of their internal and external experiences and teach coping skills for improved quality of life.
After assessing your mental health concerns shared during your first session, your psychologist can provide you with guidance on the need for further sessions or referrals for additional support. Most clients find that they benefit from counseling every week or every two weeks, to help maintain the momentum of their mental health processing and goals. However, our counselors can accommodate your needs for session frequency.

Psychologists prioritize your confidentiality. It is a part of their professional code of ethics. The only limits to confidentiality are if a child, vulnerable adult, or animal is at risk of harm, if you are at risk of hurting yourself or someone else, when your information is subpoenaed by a court of law for legal proceedings. In these situations, your counsellor will inform you of their need to reach out to the appropriate authorities.
Psychologists take confidentiality so seriously that they may not even acknowledge that they know you if they bump into you outside of the office. You may say hello, but please note that someone you are with may ask who you are greeting. It's OK for you to not say hello either. Your psychologist won’t feel bad; he or she will understand that you are protecting your privacy.

The length of therapy depends on a number of factors and can only really be determined on a case-by-case basis. Most clients start to see some positive changes within the first 4-6 sessions, and feel that therapy is complete somewhere between 6-18 sessions. Many people continue psychotherapy even after they solve the problems that brought them in initially. That’s because they continue to experience new insights and want to continue on their healing journey.
